Period Power: Harnessing the Fertility of Menstruation for Soil Health

Period blood is often shrouded in stigma and taboo, but did you know that it has the potential to be an incredible natural fertilizing agent? That's right, period blood is packed with nutrients that can take infertile soil and make it fertile.

One example of this is the story of Coach Korra, who poured a solution of her menstrual cup contents and water over a patch of dead, grainy dirt. After just one application, the once lifeless patch of dirt was thriving with new plant growth. This isn't an isolated incident either, as there are many accounts of plants thriving off of period blood.

The lining of the uterus is rich in nutrients to nourish a developing embryo, and when we shed this lining during menstruation, all of those nutrients go with it. However, it's important to note that period blood is an intense fertilizing agent, and adding too much to plants can actually burn them. The root system is most at risk, as it can be disintegrated by the pH of period blood. To avoid this, it's recommended to dilute period blood with water and use about one teaspoon or tablespoon (half of a whole menstrual cup's worth) per quart of water.

There are also some experts who warn that adding period blood to soil can be harmful due to the microbes it contains. Diluting period blood can help mitigate any potential issues with microbes, as well as preserve the soil's pH.

While using period blood as a fertilizer may not be for everyone, it's important to recognize that our menstrual cycles are a natural and powerful source of fertility and growth. By utilizing our periods with intention and care, we can nourish soil in a way that no one else can, without the need for expensive fertilizers or harming ourselves or the environment.

Remember, our menstrual cycles are a badass superpower, so let's embrace them with curiosity and care.
